Cough and cold are very common today due to weather changes, dust, pollution, and low immunity. Simple Siddha-based home remedies can provide quick relief and safety for most people when used correctly.
Below are some traditional, easy and effective time-tested remedies you can prepare at home.

- Aadathodai Decoction
- Fresh leaves of Aadathodai are crushed and boiled in water until the quantity is reduced and decoction is ready then honey is mixed and taken.
- Turmeric–Dried Ginger (Manjal–Chukku) Decoction
- Boil equal amounts of turmeric and dried ginger in water. After boiling, the decoction is ready then added honey and a pinch of Thippili.
- Good for throat irritation and reduces cold-induced body pain.
- Thulasi–Pepper–Onion–Kodom puli Decoction
- Thulasi leaves (Ocimum sanctum), Pepper (Piper nigrum) , Onion (Allium cepa) and Kodampuli (Garcinia cambogia) are taken, crushed and boiled in water, decoction is prepared and given a filter after it gets cooled.
- Reduces nasal congestion. Clears chest mucus and quick relief from headache due to cold
- Chewing herbs :
- *Arattai (Alpinia galanga): A piece of Arattai( Alpinia galanga) is chewed to get cured from coughing. It controls persistent coughing.
- Acts as a natural throat cleanser
- A piece of Athimathuram Glycyrrhiza glabra) is chewed to get cured from dry cough.
- The leaf juice of Adathodai one part is mixed and half part of ginger juice or honey and boiled to mezhugu patham given in doses of 2-4 Kuntri alavu.(Approx 130mg). Reduce wheezing.
- Thippili Rasayanam (Mild Version)
- Mix 1 tsp Thippili powder with warm ghee and palm jaggery. Relieves cold-related asthma.
- Betel Leaf Steam (Vethalai Pathu)
- Boil betel leaves in water. Inhale the steam for 2–3 minutes. Opens blocked nose. Reduces sinus pressure
- Mix very small edible camphor in warm coconut oil. Apply gently on the chest and throat. Reduces cough during night time.
- Milagu Rasam (Pepper Soup)Improves digestion. Reduces cold symptoms.
Safe Use Tips:
1. Mild versions like Thulasi tea, Milagu Rasam, and honey (for 1 year+ only) are safe.
2. Not recommended for infants below 1 year (especially honey and strong spices).
3. Mild Thulasi water and warm pepper rasam may be used, but consult your doctor before trying strong herbs like Thippili and adathodai.
4. Frequently 1–2 times a day is usually enough.
